I can sometimes - ok a lot of the time - sound like a broken record when it comes to gratitude. It is the single most powerful and transformative thing that I embraced in my life. That is not an exaggeration at all, if anything, it is a gross understatement.
Once you start setting time aside every single day to acknowledge the blessings in your life, and to give thanks for them, your entire Universe changes. Not only that, your actual brain function changes. You create new neuropathways in your brain when you express gratitude. That's science y'all, not mumbo-jumbo.
Four years ago, when my husband of 15 years separated from me, I made the conscious choice to see the devastating, heartbreaking, terrifying experience as an opportunity to rewrite my story. To reacquaint myself with me. To reconnect with my too-long dormant spiritual self. This journey encompassed many things from yoga to working with a personal life coach. I learned to honor my thoughts, feelings and time. I also became familiar with the simple concept of gratitude. Simple, because we are all taught to say thank you. Little did I know that this simple thing held a power that would change everything for me.
I incorporated gratitude into my daily life. No matter how shitty of a day I had, I always, always made myself come up with three things that I was grateful for at the end of that day. Believe me, some days it was damn hard - my ego would be in full blown tantrum mode and would be refusing to even acknowledge the simplest thing to be thankful for, but once I learned to quiet that voice, I would begrudgingly find one thing.....then another....then another. Always. I still end my days like this. I go to sleep with the warm vibration of gratitude in my heart and mind.
Eventually I felt guided to create a social media Gratitude group. People from all over can share their gratitudes - no matter how seemingly big or small - and everyone would benefit from it. Gratitude also works like that, you see...even reading what others are grateful for can help us to see those same things in our own lives. My group has been eerily quiet for a while now and I have been noticing promptings from the Universe that I need to start things up in there again.
Hence this gratitude challenge that I am beginning today. Thirty days of gratitude, with a different prompt each day. Easy peasy! Even the most gratitude-challenged can follow this one!!
I realize that some of my readers are not on Facebook so I will be posting the daily gratitude prompts on here as well as on my Spiritual Coffee Facebook page here. I will also be posting them in my Gratitude group in the hopes to inspire some others.
Now here is where you, my beautiful readers, come in. I want to hear from you!! Share your gratitude with all of us! Comment below each day or Tweet it to me at @spiritualjava or on my Facebook page. I love seeing what others are grateful for! I'll post the 30 day "shedule" below in case you want to plan ahead. haha!
Today is day 1 and the prompt for today is: "What smell are you grateful for today?"
Hmmmm....today I am grateful for the smell of pretty much everything! I have been sick with a terrible chest and sinus cold for over a week so the fact that I CAN smell today is a win!
I look forward to sharing this month of gratitude with you all. I promise you that it will change your life and will be the best habit you ever formed.
